Sleaford pupils help equip African school

A Sleaford area primary school has been fundraising to deliver gifts of resources to help a school in the small, West African country of The Gambia.

The project has seen pupils of St Andrew’s School in Leasingham linked with the Bakoteh Annex Lower Basic School.

Leasingham head David Hodgson said: “The school is very basic and receives very little in terms of sponsorship.

“It has 3,000 children attending with 1,500 in the morning and 1,500 in the afternoon.”

The Leasingham school raised money from recent events, such as a disco, and members of the School Council decided to spend the money on buying school equipment for the Gambian children.

St Andrews’ School Bursar and Governor, Christine Trevithick, and her husband, travelled to the Gambia during the Easter break and took pens, pencils, crayons, rulers, a range of games for the children to play and sewing resources bought with the money raised.

She spent time with the headteacher exploring the school which was very different to Leasingham, said Mr Hodgson: “The children loved the gifts to help with their learning.”
