Snow disrupts bin collections

Snow and ice have caused disruption to some waste and recycling collections across the district today (Monday 6th February).

The council is pledging to carry on emptying bins where possible. But on some ungritted side roads crews have been told to take no chances.

“Where it is deemed unsafe to operate heavy machinery, or for teams to be lifting and carrying heavy waste long distances over slippery surfaces, crews have been told to return later to collect bins,” said waste services manager Glyn Pilkington.

Temperatures today are predicted to stay above freezing and no snow is forecast. However, icy conditions will remain a problem throughout the week.

While noting that the council would make collections today ‘where ever possible’, Mr Pilkington said the safety of the public and collection crews was his highest priority and no risks would be taken.

Residents expecting a scheduled collection today or tomorrow should put their bins out, but collections could be later than normal.

Residents should leave uncollected bins out so crews can clear them as soon as possible once it is safe to do so.
