Temperatures dropped to minus eight degrees Celsius in some places before the snow hit Saturday afternoon and continued throughout the evening until the early hours of Sunday morning.

It caught many motorists by surprise and cars could be seen struggling with the icy conditions as they went toe-to-toe with the elements.

Notts County Council sent out gritters over the weekend in an attempt to keep the county on the move.

A spokesman said: “For the rest of the week, with no more snow forecast until the weekend, it will be business as usual with precautionary gritting being carried out each evening and the council’s gritting teams closely monitoring the weather situation.”

“Temperatures are predicted to fall below freezing each night so motorists are advised to drive with caution.”
