Soldier from the Mercian Regiment killed in Afghanistan is named

A BRITISH soldier from the 2nd Battalion, The Mercian Regiment (Worcesters and Foresters), killed in an explosion in Afghanistan has been named.

Captain Rupert Bowers, 24, was working alongside an Afghan security forces patrol when he was struck by the blast from an improvised explosive device on Wednesday.

The soldier, from Wolverhampton, had been honoured in 2008 for his bravery in Afghanistan the previous year.

He was attached to 2nd Battalion The Rifles, operating as an adviser to the Afghan National Army, the Ministry of Defence said.

The Mercian Regiment recruit largely from Notts.
