Sombre start to Easter in the Isle

Easter celebrations in the Isle had a sombre start as a huge cross was carried through Epworth town centre.

The annual Good Friday Walk of Witness sees Christians of different denominations and of no affiliation imitate the journey that Jesus Christ took carrying his cross through the streets of Jerusalem.

In Epworth, members of the Anglican, Baptist and Methodist churches took part in the event, organised by Epworth Churches Together.

Dramatic readings, prayers and song helped to re-enact Christ’s Passion and Crucifixion.

The walk began on the steps of Wesley Memorial Church and processed to outside The Hub, at the foot of the lane to St Andrew’s Church and around the Market Cross.

A spokesman said: “Worshippers gathered early on Easter day to celebrate Christ’s resurrection from the dead at a Son-Rise service in the garden of Wesley Memorial Church.

“The cross, that had been bare all Holy Week, was decorated with flowers.

“This was followed by breakfast including traditional boiled easter eggs.”

The weekend also saw special services at the Wesley Memorial Methodist Church starting with a Good Friday service led by Reverend David Leese and on Easter Sunday an all-age worship in the morning and an evening sermon with Reverend Stuart Gunson, including holy communion.

Easter is the most important and oldest festival of the Christian church, celebrating the resurrection of Christ and held, in the Western church, between March 21 and April 25, on the first Sunday after the first full moon following the northern spring equinox.
