South Kesteven raises flag in Grantham to celebrate Commonwealth Day

South Kesteven joined thousands of people across the globe to raise a Commonwealth Flag yesterday as part of ceremonies celebrating Commonwealth Day.

South Kesteven’s ‘Fly a Flag for the Commonwealth’ event took place outside the district council offices in St Peter’s Hill in Grantham, led by Chairman of South Kesteven District Council, Coun Judy Smith.

She read a message from Her Majesty The Queen and a specially written Commonwealth Affirmation before the flag was raised acknowledging the celebration.

Deputy Chairman Coun Jacky Smith also read a message from the Secretary-General of the Commonwealth of Nations, The Right Honourable Patricia Scotland QC. The messages reaffirmed the commitment of all Commonwealth member states to democracy, development, and respect for diversity.

The annual event enables participants to show appreciation for the values the Commonwealth upholds, and the opportunities offered for friendship and cooperation with young and old fellow Commonwealth citizens around the world.

Flags have been raised in over 50 locations throughout the United Kingdom, Channel Islands, Isle of Man, UK Overseas Territories, and Commonwealth countries.

The messages reaffirmed the commitment of all Commonwealth member states to democracy, development, and respect for diversity.

Young members of the United Kingdom Army Cadet Force (ACF) also took the Commonwealth flag to the top of the highest peaks in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
