South Yorkshire: Cyclists urged to take extra care during the summer

In the five years up to 2012, 1,472 cyclists in the county were either killed or injured on South Yorkshire roads.

The summer months of June to October show the largest risks to cyclists so the partnership is urging people to stay safe during the sunny weather.

Joanne Wehrle, South Yorkshire safer roads partnership education manager, said: “So often we see tragic endings to what should be fun filled and exciting days out.”

“I would encourage any cyclist and in particular, parents of younger cyclists, to ensure that they and their children are correctly dressed, are visible to other roads users and wear correctly fitted cycle helmets.”

“All cyclists have a responsibility for their own safety and should not rely on others to provide it for them.”

A free DVD, the Urban Cycling Guide produced by Road Safety GB, provides simple but helpful tips on road positioning, awareness of other road users and simple route planning for busy journeys.

It also provides advice on safety clothing and staying visible to other road users. Free copies of the DVD can be obtained by calling in at the Rotherham Council building on Main Street in Rotherham.

The local authority also provides help and guidance for individuals and groups. This includes free cycle training in schools as well as for individuals and family groups and free high visibility clothing. Further advice and information can be provided about cycle safety, including campaigns to encourage cyclists to wear bright and reflective clothing making them more visible to other road users.
