Street lighting on the coast found to be on in the day

The Leader was made aware of street lights being on in Champion Way in Mablethorpe last week, by resident Brian Wesley. Ian Wild from Sutton on Sea also saw there were lights still burning the midnight oil in the day on the Promenade.

This discovery comes just weeks after Lincolnshire County Council announced that thousands of street lights would be switched off between midnight and 6am.

The big switch off scheme is a bid for the council to make savings of £1.7m.

Lincolnshire County Council oversee street lighting in residential roads and East Lindsey District Council look after lights on the promenade.

An East Lindsey District Council spokesman told the Leader that they were aware of the lights being on at Sutton on Sea Promenade and the issue has been passed on to their contractors to sort out. They were unsure as to the reason they were on.

However the street light in Champion Way was on due to a fault. A highways spokesman at the county council also confirmed there is no extra cost involved when a light is left on in the day.

The spokesman said: “This light being on will be due to a fault with the street light. We are responding to emergency faults in accordance with our normal processes.

“We’re not charged by the electricity companies for the extra energy used due to faults like this.”
