Surgeon awarded after removing two kilo tumour from Doncaster woman’s neck
Mr Muhamad Quraishi, affectionately known as Q by his hospital colleagues, is the first Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) surgeon in the whole of South Yorkshire to be in the running for this national trainer award, and was nominated by ENT surgical trainees.

Hide AdA delighted Mr Quraishi said: “It is a great honour for me personally to be nominated and to be a finalist. The Silver Scalpel is the most prestigious trainer award to be bestowed to a surgical consultant in the UK.”
In February this year Mr Quraishi led a team of surgical specialists in an operation to successfully remove the largest ever head and neck tumour reported in the UK (two kilogram) from the neck of a Doncaster woman.
Mr Quraishi has a great passion for the education and training of surgeons and takes on a number of roles including a specialist adviser to the Royal Colleges’ Joint Committee on Surgical Training, playing a key part in setting educational standards, developing the curriculum for trainee ENT surgeons, and providing guidance and advice to trainees and trainers. He is also an Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer in Surgical Oncology at the University of Sheffield and in January 2005, he launched a pioneering series of ENT Masterclasses that have grown into a leading education programme that has attracted participants from across the globe.

The winner of the National Silver Scalpel Award will be announced at the Annual General Meeting of the Association of Surgeons in Training in Glasgow on 28 February 2015. The Silver Scalpel will be presented to the winner by Professor Sir Bruce Keogh, Medical Director of the National Health Service.
