Talented Isle teen carries away top art trophy

Her passion for painting has won an Isle teenager national recognition.

Former South Axholme Academy pupil Cherise Foster of Epworth beat over 6000 other talented teens to scoop first place in the Young Artist of the Year Competition run by the Society for All Artists.

With her artwork ‘Golden Glade’, an oil painting on canvas board of a woodland scene, Cherise took the title of Young Artist of the Year, for the age group 16 to 25 years.

The 18-year old travelled down to London to receive her award at a presentation ceremony at the Islington Business Centre.

Despite her young age, Cherise has already exhibited her work twice in Chelsea Town Hall on Kings Road, London, and achieved the accolade of top seller for this year, with 14 of her choice pieces snapped up by art enthusiasts.

Her mother, Karen Foster, said that Cherise already has many people from the Isle and from further afield tracking her progress.

She told the Bells: “Cherise was thrilled to win her award and was proudly cheered on by her mum, dad and grandma at the presentation.”

The young artist said: “I was very excited when I heard I had won and it was very exciting travelling down to London to be presented with the trophy and certificate.

“As I would like to make my career in art, winning this competition has given me a huge confidence boost and made me more determined than ever to follow my dreams.”

Cherise developed her interest in art from about Year 9 at South Axholme Academy, and followed it up further while a student for the past two years at John Leggott College.

This month she will begin studying Fine Art at St Helen’s University.

The Young Artist of the Year Competition is a platform that is open to everyone who would like to enter irrespective of age, ability, medium or subject matter.

A passion for painting is all that is required of entrants, who are informed: ‘You don’t have to be a professional artist or have years of painting experience’.

The over all Artist of the Year carries away a £2,000 cash sum, to include £1000 cash and £1,000 worth of art materials.

They also receive an engraved crystal goblet, and £500 worth of art materials for an art club, group or school of choice.
