Team help disabled teen scale Mount Snowdon

Sam Elliff, 29, was one of four people from Lincolnshire County Council’s Boston-based Early Help Team to take part in the fundraiser, dubbed the Snowdon Shove.

It saw a team of 15 in all, plus two carers, assist Ryan Smith, 19, of Chapel St Leonards, scale Wales’ highest mountain last Friday.

Ryan suffered severe brain injuries in a cycling accident in 2013 when not wearing a helmet and relies on the use of a wheelchair.

The climb was in support of the Ryan Smith Foundation, which was set up by Ryan and his family to assist those with brain injuries and promote the use of cycle helmets.

The group from the Early Help Team were inspired to support the effort after Ryan delivered a presentation to young people in Boston as part of a keep safe day.

The team had to overcome a number of extra challenges on the day, including the push bar on the back of Ryan’s wheelchair breaking 500 yards into the seven-mile route. It would ultimately take them four hours and 20 minutes to reach the summit.

Sam described it as ‘great challenge for all’, which was ‘thoroughly enjoyed from start to finish’.

The foursome expect to have raised more than a £1,000 through their effort.
