Teen spared jail for street-robbing

A TEENAGER who ‘man-handled’ two 14-year-old boys during a street robbery in Gainsborough has been spared custody by a judge.

Appearing before court on Friday 27th January, 19-year-old Ryan Hadaway admitted taking small change from the two boys after confronting them on Sandsfield Lane.

Lincoln Crown Court heard Hadaway pushed one of the boys against a wall and held him whilst money was removed from his pockets.

Phil Howes, prosecuting, said the second boy was also man-handled and had £2 rifled from his pockets.

The court was told another teenager took part in the robbery but Hadaway played the major role.

Mr Howes added: “Mr Hadaway was the leading light and thoroughly drunk at the time.”

Mark Knowles, mitigating, told the court Hadaway’s accomplice had a worse criminal record.

Mr Knowles said: “Since this incident Mr Hadaway has tried to gain employment by taking a qualification in bricklaying. If he passes the next stage if will result in an employment placement.”

He added: “He has tried to keep away from bad influences and is at loss to what happened that night.”

Hadaway, of Beckett Avenue, Gainsborough, admitted two charges of robbery at around at around 9pm on 2nd June last year.

He was placed under the supervision of a probation officer for 18 months and ordered to carry out 40 hours of unpaid work in the community.

Passing sentence Recorder Richard Burns told Hadaway: “If you complete your bricklaying course you can live a fruitful and good life.”
