Teen who broke into his grandfather's house has been given a final warning by judge

Callum Johnson failed to keep appointments with the probation service and did not turn up for unpaid work sessions after he received a suspended jail sentence and 150 hours of unpaid work for carrying out a burglary at the home of his own grandfather.

Johnson appeared in court earlier this month to admit breach of his suspended jail sentence and was warned he must start to engage with the probation service or he would be locked up.

Thomas Bramall, prosecuting, told a hearing at Lincoln Crown Court on Tuesday, April 26, that Johnson has now resumed his unpaid work sessions and is complying with the original court order.

Judge John Pini QC gave Johnson an extra 15 hours of unpaid work for breach of the suspended sentence.

The judge told Johnson: “This was something you were ordered to do. It is not an option. I am giving you one last chance.

“If there is one more breach you will go to prison.”

David Eager, defending, said that Johnson originally moved to the south-east to work for an uncle but that fell through and he returned to Lincolnshire.

He said Johnson then failed to engage with the probation service and “buried his head in the sand”.

Mr Eager said: “He failed earlier but is now committed to the unpaid work.

“He understands the importance of this.”

Johnson,19, of Fillingham Close, Gainsborough, carried out the original burglary last year and in October he appeared before Lincoln Crown Court and he admitted burglary of his grandfather’s home in St John’s Terrace, Gainsborough.

The court was told that Johnson entered the property in the early hours but was disturbed when his grandfather, Jeffrey Thom, heard noises shortly before 4am and went to investigate.

Johnson was found hiding in an upstairs room and when confronted he put his hands over his head and ran down the stairs.

He was recognised by his grandfather who called the police and Johnson was arrested.
