TEN YEARS AGO: Snowy start to 2010 for Skegness

Across Skegness, Spilsby, and Alford, schools were forced to close due to staff issues and safety concerns as a result of the weather.

At Skegness’ Natureland Seal Sanctuary, staff battled through the conditions to check on the animals.

Duncan Yeadon, from Skegness’ Natureland Seal Sanctuary, said: “The three basic requirements of food, water, and shelter are even more important in the terrible weather that we have had over the past few weeks. “Our staff have been hard at work making sure all the animals are dealing with the cold. The water in the containers for the goats keeps icing over and has to be broken several times a day.

“The heaters in the greenhouses that house the tropical birds and plants have been working overtime to keep the minimum heat needed. The tropical fish in the Aquarium and reptiles in the Tropical House similarly cannot survive if the temperature drops too low.

“The seals, however, don’t seem to mind the cold as they have a thick layer of blubber to keep them warm!”
