Mrs McClarkin spoke to Year 10 citizenship pupils about the role of the European Union, its electoral systems, and how it affects the UK.

She said: “Young people are not always engaged with politics. I like to encourage children to get into politics – they even come see me in the EU sometimes.”

Mrs McClarkin was elected to the European Parliament in June 2009 for the Conservative Party; aged 30 at the time, it made her the UK’s youngest MEP.
