Todwick: Councillors install new war memorial

Parish councillors in Todwick hope that a new war memorial to be installed outside the village hall will become ‘the heart’ of the village.

The marble obelisk will be erected to commemorate the dead of two World Wars and in all conflicts since.

There will be a formal unveiling of the memorial on Saturday 29th March, as well as an exhibition inside the village hall where war-time memorabilia and modern British army equipment will be displayed.

Coun Eileen Northall, of Todwick Parish Council, who is leading the project, lost her father during the Second World War.

She hopes the memorial will provide a place for Todwick residents to remember any loved ones who have made sacrifices for their country.

She said: “We would very much like this memorial to become the heart of the village.”

Last week members of the parish council also planted flowers around the war memorial, some of which were donated by Hobson’s Nurseries in Swallownest.

Mrs Northall added: “Hobson’s have been extremely generous in donating flowers to plant around the war memorial.”

“The council would also like to pay thanks to Ringway, the construction company who are currently working on the A57 bypass.”

“Ringway have been extremely helpful by laying the paving around the memorial amongst other things- all voluntarily.”

David Gregory, vice chairman, said: “It is so important that the people who made sacrifices should never be forgotten.”

“The memorial has been developed in response to parish plan- one of the reoccurring themes was the fact Todwick has no centre, so we hope the memorial will establish the village hall and its surroundings as a focal point.”

The memorial will be unveiled by Coun Gordon Watson from Rotherham Council at 2 o’ clock.

Members of the public are invited to attend the unveiling and the exhibition- entry is free and refreshments will also be provided.
