The unnamed tortoise was handed in to Kirks Vets on East Road in town at lunchtime today (Wednesday) after being found by a passer by on Roxholme Lane this morning.

Jay Daniels brought in the creature, explaining: “A motorist found him in the road and brought him to our house.”

Heather Smith from the practice said it was being checked over by a vet and an appeal for its owner would be put on their Facebook page shortly too.

She said the vets often get stray animals brought in to them in the hope that they can be reunited with their owners.

She said: “Cats and dogs are normally microchipped so we can trace the owners, but then we also get things like hedgehogs.

Although there were no return addresses or bar codes printed on its shell, Heather said some tortoises can be microchipped too, but not this one.

“It is quite large, healthy and looks like it is well looked after,” she said.
