Car driver dies after A1 crash which caused 33-mile diversion

The driver of a car died during a crash on the A1 in the early hours of this morning (Thursday, December 10).

The crash between a green VW Polo car and a HGV took place at around 2am today (Thursday, December 10) and happened on the northbound carriageway near Stretton, Rutland.

The driver of the Polo sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. No more details of the deceased have yet been released.

The crash result in a 33-mile diversion being put in place while investigations took place.

The northbound carriageway was shut between Stamford and Colsterworth and there was a lane shut southbound as well following a single vehicle crash at Townsend Road, the Wittering turn off.

A 33-mile diversion was put in place via the A606 to Melton Mowbray and the A607 to Grantham, both of which were more congested than normal.

The road re-opened at around 10.30am.

Police are appealing for anyone who was travelling along the A1 during the early hours of this morning to contact DC 1504 Seamus Burns on 101.
