'This isn’t a simple resurfacing job' - Major road near Boston to be upgraded, up to 14 weeks of disruption for motorists

A stretch of a major road near Boston is to be significantly upgraded, with motorists being told to expect up to 14 weeks of disruption.

The work will take place on the A17 between the Bicker Bar roundabout and the junction of Hipper Lane, near Wigtoft.

It will begin on Monday, April 20*, last for up to 14 weeks, and involve night-time road closures from 8pm to 6am (weekdays only).

A 16-mile division will be in place via the A52 and A16, which meet in Boston at the Liquorpond Street roundabout.

The project will not only result in the surface of the road being reconstructed, but also a junction re-designed to improve safety.

Coun David East, executive member for highways at Lincolnshire County Council, said: “Not only is this section of the A17 nearing the end of its serviceable life, but the Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership has also flagged up Mill Lane junction as a potential safety risk.

“As a result, we’ll be improving safety and visibility at this junction by re-aligning the existing layout and introducing a right-turn lane for vehicles turning onto the B1181.”

“This isn’t a simple resurfacing job,” he continued. “It’s a major road reconstruction that will see the current carriageway between Bicker Bar roundabout and Hipper Lane fully excavated and replaced with roughly 13,000 tonnes of new road surfacing. This will return the road back to its original condition, making it much smoother and safer to drive on moving forward.”

He added: “The site team will be doing all they can to keep disruption to a minimum, including carrying the works out at night to keep people moving during the day.

“In the meantime, I want to thank everyone in advance for their patience.”

Coun Paul Lock, county councillor for Boston Rural, said: “More and more potholes seem to be forming on this stretch of the A17, so I’m glad to see these roadworks will be happening now before it can get any worse. I’m also very pleased that the team will be improving visibility at the Mill Lane junction since it has become a safety concern in recent years.

“When finished, these works will be a huge benefit to everyone using the A17.”

* Start date originally announced as Monday, April 13.
