John Mann, MP for Bassetlaw, said: “I knew Tony Benn and he was a very engaging and polite man.”

“He had the ability to put an argument forward very eloquently- something that we are lacking today. Many of his ideas are still relevant.”

Coun Anne Western, Leader of Derbyshire County Council, said: “Tony Benn was a hugely influential and popular politician, the likes of whom we’ll never see again. “

“His contribution to public life, at both local and national level, during his long and distinguished career was immense.”

“His life’s work helped make a difference to countless residents and his legacy will live on.”

“He will be missed and our thoughts are with his family.”

Mr Benn entered Parliament at the young age of 25 and served as an MP for more than 50 years, establishing himself as a primary figure on the left of the party.

He had been seriously ill but died ‘peacefully’ at his west London home.
