Floor tiles and piping work were discovered whilst excavation work was taking place on the grounds of the National Trust site, Clumber Park, to install a new drainage system.

The original mansion was once home to the Dukes of Newcastle.

The floor that has been exposed is an area of the mansion located between the main kitchen and the Duke’s study.

A National Trust spokesman said: “The floor is not open for the public to see at this time and it will be covered back up early next week for work to continue. Further plans and opportunities for this to be exhibited are underway.”
