The 37-year-old male lorry driver and his 32-year-old male passenger, both from West Yorkshire, were also both injured as a result of the collision and taken to hospital for treatment. Their injuries are still being assessed.

Three fire crews attended the scene as well as two air ambulances.

The spokesman said: “We are appealing for any witnesses who may have seen the collision or either of the vehicles beforehand. Anyone with any information is asked to contact us on our collision witness hotline 01522 558855 or the non-emergency number 101, quoting incident 84 of 11/01/2016.”

Residents have recently submitted a petition to the county council calling for the speed limit on the stretch of road to be reduced to 30mph due to the hill and bend close to the turning for Dunston.
