Vandals hit allotment

Offenders got into the Claylands Avenue Gardeners Society allotments, on the Dukeries Industrial Estate, between 4.30pm on Saturday and 7.45am on Sunday.

They killed three chickens, broke padlocks, damaged shed doors and knocked the head off a scarecrow. Nothing was stolen in the attack.

“This was inane vandalism from someone with a complete lack of respect for their community,” said local PCSO Andy Carter.

“The killing of the birds is senseless, abject cruelty and the incident has been reported to the RSPCA.”

Allotments manager Martin Hadfield said this attack was the latest in a string of incidents which started back in May.

“Since May we have had problems right through the summer, from mindless vandalism of sheds to smashing pumpkins and stealing mowers” he said.

“There have been over 80 incidents. We have had a lot of support from the council and local police officers but we are still suffering from this mindless vandalism.”

During the incident there were 30 separate incidents of damage and theft.

“They smashed heads off scarecrows, trashed sheds and slashed polytunnels,” continued Mr Hadfield.

“There are four people who keep poultry for eggs, and they broke into one of the hen houses and killed three birds.”

“Who would do such a thing? It is just vandalism for no reason. We are all very upset and concerned.”

“Somebody out there must know who is doing this.”

Police have increased patrols in the area. They have also asked those with allotments on the site to be vigilant and ensure their property is secure.

“The Claylands site is the largest in Bassetlaw and covers eight acres. We have over 100 tenants and people on the waiting list,” added Mr Hadfield.

“We built a community garden with £42,000 of grants, and have close ties with local schools and groups.”

“W are trying to provide some lovely facilities for the community, and wouldn’t it be a shame if after all this hard work if the same thing was to happen again.”
