Vesuvius issues ‘resolved’

Commercial Estates Group, and the local authority have reached compromise on the details that were delaying progress on the development.

And now both parties must play a waiting game, as the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government decides whether or not to allow work to begin.

The initial proposals for the site were turned down by the council, which was concerned about the impact the development would have on the town centre.

In 2011 Secretary of State Eric Pickles upheld the decision of the council to deny planning permission, when CEG appealed.

But in April of this year his decision to deny the appeal was quashed in the High Court, and all parties involved were invited to make written submissions for reconsideration.

The agreement reached by CEG and the council means both parties are singing off the same hymn sheet and will be keen to avoid a public inquiry.

David Hodgson from CEG told the Guardian that they had ironed out the areas of disagreement with the local authority.

“We are pleased that we have managed to resolve the outstanding issues with Bassetlaw District Council regarding the delivery of a mixed-use development in Worksop, anchored by a new Asda foodstore.”

“We look forward to a decision from the Planning Inspectorate in due course.”

A spokesman for the Department for Communities and Local Government confirmed that Mr Pickles had received statements from the concerned parties.

“We have received an awful lot of material, and the next decision will be if it goes to a public inquiry, or is simply decided on written submissions.”

Worksop Town Football Club are another intested party, hoping to gain a new home from the site.
