VIDEO: Charity walker finds hospitality in Worksop, Retford, Dinnington and Saxilby

Colm Farrell travelled through Worksop, Retford, Dinnington and Saxilby this week, appealing for a bed each night.

The 46-year-old is halfway through his trek, which he is hoping to complete in June this year.

Colm left his home town of Tuam in Ireland to walk around the emerald isle to raise money and awareness of suicide prevention.

The support he gained during the first leg of the walk, spurred him on to take his trek across the UK.

He said: “I’m raising awareness of Console, which supports people with suicidal thoughts, their families and those who have lost loved ones through suicide.”

“They have recently opened offices in London and are looking to do something in Leeds too.”

“I’m walking 5,000 miles through 86 counties to raise awareness and money for them.”

Colm has had a comfortable night’s sleep in almost every place he has visited, thanks to the kind hospitality of locals.

In Dinnington, he was given a hotel room at the Ibis in Bramley to rest his head, and in Worksop, Tuxford, Retford and Saxilby, he was also given shelter after appeals on Twitter.

“I rely entirely on other people to provide me with food and shelter,” he said.

I’ve managed to get a plank (bed) every night for the past two years, except once in the far north of Scotland where I had to pitch a tent.”

“The hospitality has been fantastic. I can’t thank them enough.”

The Guardian caught up with Colm as he left Retford and made his way to Saxilby.
