A keen writer in her younger days, Gladys is still able to recite the poems she penned word for word.

Born on February 15, 1912, Gladys was orginally from Sloothby, but spent much of her life in Burgh le Marsh.

Married to late husband Fred, she was a devoted mum to seven children.

The latest generation of the family, great-great grandchildren Toby, three, and four-month-old Max Carter were among the well-wishers at her birthday party.

Daughter Iris Mason said: “Mum has always been interested in life and was a pianist and organist at Burgh Methodist Chapel and a WI member.

“She enjoyed travelling and visited Africa in her seventies. She still completes the crossword every day, a lady at the home reads out the clues and writes the answers in for her.”

Lesley Blackett, deputy manager at Westcotes Residential Home, said: “Gladys is absolutely marvellous for her age. She is just lovely, there is no other word to describe her.”
