Mayor of Grantham Ian Selby will stand for Parliament in next month’s General Election as an independent candidate.

Coun Selby announced today in the Mayor’s Parlour in the Guildhall he would fight for the Grantham and Stamford seat.

In his speech he said he had decided to stand because he has been disgusted by the way he has been treated by the local Labour party.

Coun Selby said he had been a loyal member of the Labour Party and had worked hard as a councillor for 20 years and as Mayor this term. He and his deputy, Coun Bruce Wells, will not stand as Labour candidates for the Harrowby ward after they were deselected by the local party last month.

But both men have said they will stand for the Harrowby ward as independents.

Coun Selby posted a video on his Facebook page making his announcement. He was accompanied by his A Cheeky Monkey puppet which he has used in shows to raise money for charity. You can see the video at www.facebook.com/cllrian.selby
