Around 72 PSCO roles will be cut in Nottinghamshire, a reduction of 25 per cent, with eight coming in Worksop.
Chris Berry, branch chairman for Notts Police Unison, was out in Worksop on Wednesday 10th June with Dave Ratchford, Unison head of police and justice for the East Midlands, asking residents to sign their petition.
Mr Berry said: “We see this as unacceptable. Paddy Tipping has made this decision that he wants to get rid of 72 PCSOs, we’re saying lets go to referendum, let the members of the public of Nottinghamshire have their say on if they want to cut policing or not and put it to referendum.”
Notts Police and Crime Commissioner, Mr Tipping, recently said that the number of exact PCSOs facing the axe would not be decided until September.
“Both the Chief Constable and I recognise the value and importance both of PCSOs and neighbourhood policing,” he said. The proposal to reduce PCSO numbers is driven entirely by the very tough financial climate.”
