With more than 5,000 people making the trip to Epworth each year to see the one-time home of the Wesleys and Methodism, the museum also holds special days and activities in its grounds.

There are new attractions for previous visitors to enjoy, including the huge fireplaces that have been uncovered within phase one of the restoration project. Recent finds include a possible Wesley shoe, found stashed in the ceiling of the kitchen, and a bust of Alexander Kilham that was discovered at an auction and brought back to Epworth.

A display outlines the work done so far on restoration of the house, and what is yet to be done ... right up to phase four and the creation of a new visitors’ centre.

Curator, the Rev Claire Potter, said: “We now have full disabled access to the ground floor, built by volunteers. Phase two of the project is all about access while phase three is about restoring the house itself.

“But we have numerous events throughout the season, including the Wesley Spring Fair on May 26, to which anyone can come. It’s a relaxed day with dancing and refreshments.”

Many visitors journey from America and South Korea to see the property, and there are some unusual parties, such as the one of 53 Nigerian bishops who called by last year, explained Rev Potter.
