VIDEO: Thousands of revellers turn out to big switch-on of Worksop’s Christmas lights

Christmas in Worksop got off to a colourful start this evening (Saturday, November 21) as bumper crowds flocked to the town’s annual light switch on.

The high street, which was closed off for the festivities, became a bustling hub of activity with rides and a Christmas market.

Appearances from Santa Claus, Mickey Mouse, Batman and Frozen’s Elsa kept youngsters, who were undeterred by the chilly weather, entertained.

The lights at the Priory Shopping Centre were turned on at 4.30pm by celebrity guest Dai Bradley, who played Billy Casper in the classic film ‘Kes’.

Dai said: “This is my very first time in Worksop, and my first time switching on any Christmas lights at all, so I am honoured to be here.”

Inspirational eight-year-old Bailey Matthews, who captured the hearts of Worksop residents when he completed a triathlon unaided despite having cerebral palsy, switched on the high street’s lights in Market Square at 5.30pm.

The crowd shouted, “Be more Bailey!” as the square’s Christmas tree was illuminated with muilticoloured lights and snow began to fall from the sky.
