With the Lancaster Just Jane stood majestically on the runway at the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre in East Kirkby all we were waiting for was the Canadian-owned bomber Vera and Thumper from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.

After two failed attempts - due to engine problems with the visiting Lancaster - there was a heightened air of anticipation.

The sell-out 5,000-strong crowd had their eyes intently trained on the sky in readiness.

The sight was quite simply breathtaking, as the only two airworthy Avro Lancasters in the world performed a spectacular fly-past over their grounded counterpart.

The sound, too, was numbing as, not to be outdone, Just Jane had her engines roaring – meaning the crowd was treated to an orchestra of 12 Merlin engines.

The sights and sounds of these warplanes will live long in the memory.

Those attending on Sunday left knowing they had been privileged to watch something spectacular.

For those who missed the event, the aircraft are due to fly back over East Kirkby on Sunday.

l In this week’s paper there is a special souvenir picture pull-out, which we hope will act as a reminder of these great occasions - and be passed down the generations.
