VIDEO: Work begins to clean up notorious fly tipping site in Manton

Work has begun to tackle a notorious fly tipping site in Manton after the build-up of more than 30 years of waste left it a blot on the landscape.

Private contractors were called in by Bassetlaw Council to create a buffer zone around the perimeter edge of the 8.5 acre field, which is situated off Radford Street, and clear some of the estimated 200 tonnes of waste that had been dumped there since the former allotment site became derelict in the early 1980s.

“It appears that some residents whose properties back onto the site, in addition to other individuals, have been fly tipping over a long period of time and we would like to make it clear that this will not be tolerated,” said Coun Julie Leigh.

Anyone caught fly tipping could face prosecution and anyone, including private contractors, subsequently found guilty, could be fined up to £50,000 and jailed for 12 months if convicted in Magistrates Court, while the fine can be unlimited fine and the jail sentence up to five years if convicted in Crown Court.
