The shortlist of names for the redeveloped square is made up from ideas submitted by the public that were originally chosen by the Council’s chairman and chief executive, and Worksop Guardian editor Chris Burton.

A spokesman from Bassetlaw District Council said: “We hope that the new Civic Square will become a focal point for the community with events like the May Day Celebration, the Remembrance Parade and Christmas Lights Switch On.”

“We will also be encouraging local community groups and organisations to use the square for their events.”

He added: “ By asking the people of Worksop to name the Civic Square we are offering everybody the chance to be involved in making the latest piece of Worksop’s history and hopefully engender a feeling of community ownership.”
