Warning by police to those considering buying fireworks

With Bonfire Night approaching and fireworks already on sale in the shops, Billingborough police are warning everyone that possession of '˜category 4' fireworks is an offence.

Category 4 fireworks can only be used by professionals.

Officers also warn that throwing fireworks is also against the law. The law says you must not set off or throw fireworks (including sparklers) in the street or other public places.

Under 18s cannot buy ‘adult fireworks’ - category 2 and 3, and it’s against the law for anyone to set off fireworks between 11pm and 7am, except for: Bonfire Night, when the cut off is midnight; New Year’s Eve, Diwali and Chinese New Year, when the cut off is 1am.

Check with your council to find out about any local rules for setting off fireworks.

The curfew is part of a range of measures introduced by the government to clamp down on anti-social behaviour.

Lincolnshire Trading Standards is also issuing a message to retailers to be careful who they sell their fireworks to.
