Warning to keep an eye on bags

Police are warning shoppers in Gainsborough to be on their guard after a number of purse-dipping thefts.

The latest incident happened in the British Heart Foundation shop at Market Place, Gainsborough, between 11.45am and 12pm on Monday 31st October.

An offender unzipped a 74-year-old woman’s handbag, which was resting on a shopping bag, and stole a purse containing around £100 cash and bank cards.

A similar incident happened in the Age Concern shop at Church Street, Gainsborough, at around 3pm on 17th October. An offender dipped into a woman’s handbag, which was hanging from her daughter’s wheelchair, and stole a purse containing around £25.

Shoppers are being urged to be vigilant, to wear their handbags over their fronts and to make sure they are zipped up at all times.

Purse chains and bells are available from local beat teams. Call the non-emergency number to get in touch with them.

Police are also appealing for anyone with any information on these crimes to get in touch and help them with their enquiries.
