Warning to keep valuables out of sight

South Yorkshire Police are urging people not to leave property on display in vehicles and homes after an increase in burglaries.

Over the last few weeks, there has been an increase in thefts of property left on display across the borough.

Crime reduction officer Andy Robinson said there have been a number of instances where motorists have parked cars with sat navs on display.

“Opportunist thieves have seen the sat nav, and forced entry into the car in order to steal the system,” he said.

“I want to urge motorists who own portable sat nav systems, to remove them from their vehicle every time they leave it unattended.”

“The same applies in the home; always remove valuable items out of view of windows and doors. An opportunist thief will target your home rather than next doors if they see valuable items on display.”

People can help the police by marking their property so if it is stolen and recovered, it can be returned to its rightful owner.

Property can be marked with a UV marker pen or registered for free on Immobilise.com.
