Warning to slow down

THE South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership is appealing to young drivers to slow down.

Last year saw 4,859 people injured on South Yorkshire’s roads - 30 of those were killed. One of the most over represented groups in collisions is the 17 to 25 age group which makes up just 10 per cent of the population, but 33 per cent of all fatal collisions.

PC Mick Hedges said: “Starting to drive at a young age is something we all look forward to. It’s great getting out and about with our friends, enjoying the freedom and independence that driving brings.”

“But with that comes responsibility. What can seem fun one minute can turn into the worst day of your life in a split second.”

South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership run the Drive for Life Programme - a free road safety initiative to reduce the number of collisions involving young drivers.

Each session provides information to let young drivers make safe decisions and encourages them to think about the impact being in a crash could have on their life and the lives of their friends and family.

John Scruby, a Drive for Life presenter said added: “The behaviour of young people who are passengers in cars is as important as the driving. Avoid distracting the driver and if you feel uncomfortable by your drivers actions them to slow down or stop. Get out and stay out. It will probably be the best decision you will make.”
