WEATHER WARNING: Floods and snowfall due to “sharp contrast” in East Midlands

As a heavy rain downpour spreads across the East of the country, people in Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire are being warned about the risk of potential flooding.

Snowfall will also affect some areas, giving a slushy covering at lower levels and ice in higher areas.

A Met Office spokesman said: “Please be aware of the potential for disruption from snow or from flooding during Saturday.

“An area of low pressure, associated with a sharp north-south temperature contrast, is expected to move eastwards across central Britain on Saturday.

“This has the potential to produce 20 to 40 mm rainfall quite widely, and locally 60 mm on high ground. Lesser amounts are expected in the areas affected by last weeks floods, but may still approach 30-40 mm over the most prone spots. “

The weather warning has been issued from 9am until 8pm this evening.
