And police are asking drivers to take special care on increasingly wet roads. Hazardous driving conditions are causing problems currently on the M1 between J33, A630 (Catcliffe) and J35, A629 (Thorpe Hesley), because of surface water.

Met Office advice for the region says: “There is the potential for severe weather during Sunday as a complex depression tracks over the UK. There continues to be a great deal of uncertainty in the forecast but the public should be aware of the risk of flooding due to heavy rain as well as strong winds.”

“Given the unseasonable nature of the weather this could be sufficient to disrupt transport and make outdoor activities dangerous.”

Further heavy rain is to come tonight along with the possibility of gales.

As yet there are no flood warnings for the region from the Environment Agency but anyone who is concerned should continue to check the EA website, facebook or twitter feeds for information.

Firefighters throughout South Yorkshire have been placed on Trigger Level Two alert due to the severe weather. A fire spokseman said: “This means that all crews are on stand-by for flooding action and certain procedures are put in to place. Things are reasonably quiet at the moment with no flood calls but we will be ready to respond should the need arise.”

Fire crews will be depleted from noon to 2pm and 11pm to midnight today, as fire brigade union members stage the latest in a series of strike actions following a long running dispute with the Government over pensions. Strikes will continue at these times on each day until August 16.

As a result of this, people are asked to keep 999 calls strictly for emergencies and to a minimum during these times.
