A MET Office spokesman said: “A vigorous depression will track across Ireland during Wednesday afternoon and hence over southern Scotland by late evening.

“Squally winds will accompany the passage of a cold front eastwards across England and Wales during the afternoon with gusts of 60-70mph in places and as high as 80mph near southern coasts.

“However, a swathe of very strong winds will affect west Wales during the afternoon and parts of north Wales and northwest England during the evening, with winds also gusting to 70mph across parts of the Midlands and northern England into the evening and then 60-70mph at exposed locations in Northern Ireland and the southern half of Scotland overnight into Thursday.”
