Shop manager Pamela Squires, who has worked at the shop for over 20 years, said she was shocked to hear what had happened.

“It’s really upsetting, but I know it’ll be more upsetting when I go in,” she said.

“We are waiting to move to new premises on Edinburgh Road in the next four or five weeks, so we don’t know what will happen to this shop here.”

A police spokesman said: “It is unclear if anything was stolen in the incident and forensic examinations are due to be carried out at the scene today.”
