Work starts on Skegness Town's new ground and plans for Aldi

Home Bargains, Pets at Home and a Marstons family public house/restaurant have also been confirmed for the Burgh Road location, which has been the home of Skegness Town since the 1940s.

Residents had expected work on Town’s new ground would start in September last year, but developer Quora now expects the club will be able to move to its new location in the autumn. Plans also included improvements to pitches for Skegness Rugby Club.

Richard Wherry, director for Quora, said: “We have started works at Wainfleet Road with the aim that these are completed by autumn this year. We have been working closely with all parties involved to ensure the replacement facilities are in place for the start of the next football season.

“Once the new facilities are in place, Skegness Town FC will be able to vacate the Burgh Road site. This will be followed immediately by the demolition of the old clubhouse and construction of the new retail park.

“We have been working closely with the various parties involved to ensure no further delays are incurred.”

Martin Jackson, chairman of Skegness Town, said: “It’s very exciting for us to see the work start.

“It will be sad for the club to move from Burgh Road after being there since 1946, but we will have two new pitches, a stadium and a new community all-weather 3G pitch. We are hoping the pitch will be ready in November after two grass growing seasons in April and September.”

An Aldi spokesman said: “Aldi are fully committed to this scheme and are looking forward to opening a store in Skegness. Recruitment for the new store will take place once works on the site are able to start.”
