‘Work still to be done’ to tackle poverty in Worksop

The Department for Communities and Local Government study analysed 32,844 neighbourhoods across England.

The statistics from the 2015 Index of Multiple Deprivation looked at several factors, including employment, health, income, education, housing, environment and crime.

The figures show Manton is the 850th most deprived community in the country, with residents said to be suffering from health issues, lack of income, unemployment and education problems.

Councillor Josie Potts, Bassetlaw District Council member for Worksop South East, said: “It has improved, but there is still work to be done.

“It has been hard work, but it is getting better. However, it won’t happen overnight.

“We were on an all-time low when the pits closed, we were left in the gutter.

“Things are improving, but people need to be patient for these things to happen.”

Worksop town centre was ranked number 7,552 in the rankings, with Retford town centre positioned at 8,546.

The rankings included: Gateford, 2,880th; Creswell, 4,390th; Prospect, 4,839th; Blyth and Langold, 5,943rd; Harworth, 6,728th; Clumber, 6,814th; Rhodesia, 6,916th; Kilton, 10.408th; Clowne, 15,016th; Whitwell, 17,688th; Carlton in Lindrick 22,638th; and Shireoaks, 25,955th. Nottingham was ranked eighth for having the highest proportion of deprived areas by local authority.

Coun David Potts, Bassetlaw member for Worksop North, said: “I can only speak for my patch, but I would actually say there is not that much deprivation at all.

“We held a surgery recently and people seemed to be working and quite affluent.

“There may be some crime, but only small problems, not something to be overly concerned about.”

The Essex seaside village of Jaywick, near Clacton-on-Sea, was labelled the most deprived neighbourhood in the country.

The area around Sandy Lane in Mansfield was one of the worst across the whole of the country, ranked 16th.
