Worksop: 200 school children make one voice at Worksop College

More than 200 school children packed into Worksop College for a musical treat with cappella octet 'VOCES8' on Tuesday, 12th January.

A rare opportunity to take part in a workshop and concert with the nationally-acclaimed vocal harmony group brought together ten different preparatory and primary schools from across the region.

The climax of the day was a concert for family and friends in the chapel of Worksop College, in which pupils showcased a range of songs they had learnt in just the one day.

Feedback from pupils, teachers and parents as they left the event, and received the morning afterwards, was positive, with many already asking to book places on next year’s event.

Diane Blackman, deputy headteacher of Gateford Park Primary School in Worksop, said: “Our pupils thoroughly enjoyed the workshops and concert. Everyone we met made us feel very welcome and the children commented on what a great day they had. The catering at breaks and lunch was superb and the organisation of the day was brilliant given the number of children.”

“It was an absolutely fantastic and truly inspiring day,” said Catharine Chapman, head of music at St Peter and St Paul School in Chesterfield.

“Our pupils were buzzing when they left and could not wait to sing their songs to the headmaster the next morning.

“I loved it so much I have now booked tickets to see VOCES8 in concert at The College.”

Pupils rated the event “1000 out of 10!” and said it was the “best musical event” they had ever been to as they raced to get autographs from the VOCES8 singers.

Sarah Abbott, from Priory C of E Primary School, in Worksop said: “Our whole group had a great time and the children were very enthusiastic when sharing their experience afterwards. We found the whole day to be excellently organised and planned. Thank you!”

VOCES8 is an award-winning ensemble has established itself at the forefront of British a cappella. As well as their professional performances around the world, they are committed to continuing to work with young children to inspire them musically.

Oliver Vincent, tenor with VOCES8 said: “We always love coming to Worksop College to perform in the amazing chapel.

“The College is extremely lucky to have such wonderful music facilities. As a youngster I loved choral singing and the training and support I received at school helped me greatly to succeed professionally and achieve my ambition. This is why we all love working with school children and showing them how exciting and enjoyable music and singing can be.”
