Worksop: Bad news for excluded pupils as consultation to close Bassetlaw Learning Centre is given the go ahead

The centre, located on Newgate Street, caters for children and young people in the county with behavioural difficulties.

It also provides places for pupils aged 11 to 16 from Bassetlaw who are at risk of or have been permanently excluded from school, as well as ‘out of school’ education for children of secondary age who are not attending school as a result of their behaviour.

Coun John Peck, of Notts County Council, said: “Instead of permanently excluding children and young people with behavioural difficulties, we have encouraged schools to work together in partnership to provide improved opportunities for those who struggle in school.”

“We have found that outcomes are better for the young people when they remain within their communities, both in terms of managing their behaviour, and in relation to academic achievement.”

“The Council has considerable spare capacity in its pupil referral units, which are all receiving fewer permanently excluded pupils.”

If the closure of Bassetlaw Learning Centre is approved, it would close at the end of December this year.
