The Bassetlaw ATC, which won a national NHS award last year for Best in Partnership Working and has also featured in a BBC Radio 4 documentary on improving NHS services, is highlighted in the NHS Confederations’ Urgent and Emergency Care Forum’s report as a best practice case study to show how the challenges facing urgent and emergency care are already being addressed in some areas of the country.

The ATC was opened at Bassetlaw in 2012 and receives patient admissions from A&E, GPs, community services and the ambulance service.

It has 24 beds with quick access to diagnostic tests, enhanced pharmacy and has dedicated social care support. An acute consultant physician is present Monday to Friday and a general physician at the weekends.

The community rapid response service supports patient discharge over seven days.

Dr Steve Kell, GP and chairman at NHS Bassetlaw CCG said: “Early evaluation shows the ATC has improved clinical outcomes and patient experience, showcasing collaborative working with staff across health and social care boundaries to deliver high-quality care.

“Since the ATC was set up there has also been a reduction in average patient length of stay and mortality rates, which goes to show that this model of care is working well.”
