Worksop: Bin blaze sparks concern from local residents

A compound of 20 bins was set on fire in the early hours of Wednesday morning, establishing concern from local residents.

Fire crews and police attended the blaze at Woodland Drive at 2.12am. The two fire crews from Worksop successfully tackled the flames but residents have been left with debris, a damaged fence and no waste disposal method as a consequence of the events.

The fire service are treating the incident as a ‘malicious ignition’.

Residents say that this is not the first time wheelie bins have been set on fire on the road. One resident said: “We have no idea who did it but it is not the first time.”

“There was an awful lot of fire and damage.”

Another resident saw the flames errupt out of his bedroom window. He said: “I heard a big bang outside from the bins and heard people running off.”

“It’s worrying that this is not the first time these bins have been tourched and they are very close to properties.”

Steven Follows who lives just down the road from the incident scene said: “My wife saw the flashing of the flames so we called the fire service who were very quick.”

“This is the second time this sort of thing has happened in around the last year.”

“It was much worse this time it was only three bins before and this time 20.”

Fire chiefs have previously said that they are ‘worried’ about arson attacks in the town and the alarming number of ‘deliberate’ blazes they have been tackling. Contact Notts Police via the 101 number with any information.
