Worksop: Brave brain tumour patient determined to raise research funds with charity concert

Alan Needham, who used to live in the Worksop and Retford areas, was diagnosed with an aggressive brain tumour in January and was given a prognosis of 12-18 months after surgery.

A keen lover of music, Mr Needham is determined to raise awareness of the illness and has formed a brass band in support of Brain Tumour UK.

Mr Needham said: “This isn’t about me and my illness anymore- it’s about raising awareness for other people and attracting much-needed funding for this charity.”

“Brain tumour research receives less than 1 percent of cancer spending in the UK, despite the fact that brain tumours kill more children and adults under 40 than any other cancer- I want that to change.”

So far, the brass band have raised around £2,500.

“This is what keeps me going. I’m working tirelessly with friends and family to ensure the message is put across,” said Mr Needham.

“I want to spend the time I have left being useful and drawing attention to this forgotten cancer- every little helps,” he added.

The ‘Wear Your Hat’ brass band plus guests will play at Worksop Christ Church on Saturday 15th March, and also at St Peter’s Warmsworth Church in Doncaster on Friday 28th March.

Tickets are £5 on the door, with all proceeds going to Brain Tumour UK.
