Worksop: Call for more security as Police hunt raiders

Shop owners in Worksop’s Prospect Precinct are demanding better security in the area following an attempted robbery at the Post Office.

The raid took place around 2pm last Thursday when two men, with their faces covered, threatened a member of staff and attempted to smash a glass screen before fleeing empty-handed. The staff member was shaken but uninjured.

Police have said they will now increase their presence around the area in the wake of the incident.

But staff at neighbouring shops want more done.

“I want to see some cameras or more police patrols,” said Sarah Evans, who was working at the pharmacy next door to the Post Office at the time of the raid.

Brian Cox, of Betfred bookmakers, agreed, saying: “It’s worrying that this can happen.”

Bassetlaw Council cabinet member for neighbourhoods, Coun Julie Leigh, said: “The council is currently in the process of upgrading its town cntre CCTV system, and as part of this we are looking at ways to extend coverage into a number of other locations within Bassetlaw.”

A Post Office spokesman said: “Any robbery, or attempted robbery, is very traumatic for the victims and we will be supporting the police in their efforts to apprehend those responsible.”

The raiders fled in a red Renault Laguna, which was later recovered and is now being forensically examined.
