Worksop: Canch is named one of UK’s best parks after scooping second Green Flag award

The park has received a prestigious Green Flag Award, the second year running it has been successful in achieving Green Flag status.

The award, handed out by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy, recognises and rewards the best parks and green spaces across the country.

A Green Flag flying overhead is a sign to the public that the space boasts the highest possible standards, is beautifully maintained and has excellent facilities.

Councillor Julie Leigh, cabinet member for Neighbourhoods at Bassetlaw District Council said: “We are absolutely delighted to receive a Green Flag Award for the second successive year from Keep Britain Tidy. This Award recognises and highlights that people in Worksop are benefitting from a green space of the very highest quality and I know that town is immensely proud of the park.

“Retaining Green Flag status for The Canch is testament to the hard work and dedication of our Parks and Open Spaces team and our civic partners in Worksop.”

The Canch Park consists of two distinct areas. Memorial Gardens on the south bank of the River Ryton was opened by King George V in 1928 in remembrance of the men of Worksop who died in the First World War.

On the north side of the Ryton is an area for active recreation with a Skate Park, Adizone outdoor gym, a multi-use games area and the extremely popular fountain splash pool.

International Green Flag Award scheme manager Paul Todd said: “We are delighted to be celebrating another record-breaking year for the Green Flag Award scheme. All the flags flying this year are a testament to the efforts of the thousands of men and women, both staff and volunteers, who work tirelessly to maintain the high standards demanded by the Green Flag Award.”
